Black History Month at Braybrook

This October, Braybrook Primary Academy came together to celebrate Black History Month through a whole-school art project exploring the work of influential Black British artists. Each year group studied a different artist, learning how their understanding of different cultures and beliefs has shaped their creative expression.

Our Year 1 and Year 3 pupils explored the colourful, expressive world of Chris Ofili and Sonia Boyce, creating vibrant pieces of abstract art inspired by their unique styles. Year 2 and Year 4 looked at the thought-provoking sculptures of Hew Locke and Lubaina Himid, using these artists’ work as inspiration to create their own pieces that reflected the important role of Black people in art history.

In Year 5, pupils studied Shiraz Bayjoo, producing stunning memory collages that captured personal and cultural identity, while Year 6 took inspiration from Barbara Walker, creating powerful charcoal sketches exploring portraiture and storytelling through art.

Across the school, every class also wrote biographies of their chosen artist, deepening their understanding of their lives and artistic journeys. The celebrations concluded with a special whole-school assembly, where each year group proudly shared their learning and displayed their beautiful creations.

The project was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to appreciate the diversity and richness of Black British art and to reflect on how creativity can bring people and cultures together.
